School Uniforms

Conformity has several aspects, and it is viewed is a multitude of ways. In Nietzsche's opinion, “The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.” The Edison Board of Education is debating over the enforcement of a uniform policy for students in Kindergarten through grade 12, which will commence next year if it receives approval. Corruption is inevitable when this absolute uniformity is compelled in schools and it will have an overall negative outcome on various aspects of the district’s schools. This policy will go undoubtedly against more than the teachings of individuality that several students have been enriched by.The uniform policy that may be administered is a proposal that will leave no room for self expression, will be a costly expenditure and will not sufficiently unify the schools.

Self expression is irreplaceable and is almost invaluable to students. Regulating uniforms will abolish an important form of self expression.A student’s clothes may accurately represent their personality. A student’s personality can be based on their ability to express themselves, which will drastically lessen after they are compelled to wear uniforms. These will affect student’s and not only go against individuality, it will go against students’ personalities. When these enforcements are validated, there is a chance that students will resort to forms of negative behavior and alternate means of expressing their opinions. On the other hand, others may argue that imposing a uniform policy can obliterate unruly behavior and .endorse an increment in discipline. This is not entirely true. Students will feel the need to express themselves even more, and they may take any opportunity to to so. This is a threat to the schools because students will become more talkative and will not be any more behaved. The utilization of uniforms in this school district will abolish a common method used by students to express themselves and it will be a serious matter when students’ personalities begin to diminish.

The poor economy has increased the expenses of numerous households and institutions so drastically that any additional cost can make a necessary purchases seem extravagant. As this country’s economic state worsens, this school district’s annual budget decreases. Unfortunately, every school’s spending does the exact opposite year after year. By ordering uniforms for every student , the school district will incur a loss and there will be a significant difference in the amount each school has leftover for other necessities.Subsequently , the students’ education will suffer. The school district will not bear the burden of these expenses alone, due to the fact that the majority of households above the poverty line will not be eligible for any financial aid. Although a student requires only two or three sets of uniforms for every school year, they will need regular clothing when they’re outside of school. Furthermore, with only a few sets of clothing, parents will have to laundry more often and will have to purchase new uniforms every year. Purchasing uniforms for the school district will affect a student’s education as well as his or her family’s economic situation drastically.

According to Adlai Stevenson, “Freedom rings where opinions clash.” This is quite inaccurate. The uniform policy is controversial and both facts and opinions are colliding in schools where they have already been instituted. Still, there is no freedom because the students’ opinions aren’t taken into consideration. At first, the school may seem unified, but truly it only appears unified. Unity is a sense of togetherness and for a school to be unified, the entire student body should take pride in their school not wear the same style of clothing. The uniform policy will moreover separate the school. Every student will probably have a different opinion on the institution of the uniforms. Some students may strongly oppose it while some may be pleased by it. They all will wear uniforms because the uniforms are mandatory but they will not be unified. Some may argue that uniforms will unify the school more because they will be safer and easier to identify. As a whole, the school will be easier to identify, but to locate an individual will be extremely difficult, due to the resemblance between each student’s clothes.

The uniformity that may be enforced on students will effect several aspects of this school district and should not be imposed. The uniform will affect students’ opportunities for self expression. It will effect students’ education drastically. It will decrease the schools’ unity. Uniformity is the easy way to avoid obstacles and abolish individuality. It is the Board of Education’s duty to properly educate the youth, not corrupt their minds.
